TAMPA, Fla., Jul 11, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric kicked off her tour in Tampa, Fla., Tuesday to greet viewers and promote cancer awareness.
Couric will promote cancer screening and participate in a charity event in each of the six cities she visits during her week-long tour, CBS reported Tuesday.
"Well, any effort to encourage people to get screened is something I really support," Couric said. Her husband Jay Monahan died of colon cancer in 1998.
Couric said she appreciates people taking time out of their lives to talk informally with her about how they get their news as well as what issues are the most important to them.
In addition to Tampa, Couric will visit Denver, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Minneapolis/St. Paul, San Diego and San Francisco.
