CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia is now letting transgender people more easily change genders on driver's licenses and wear makeup and accessories for their photos.

Starting July 1, the state Division of Motor Vehicles began prohibiting staff from asking anyone to remove makeup, clothing, hairpieces or accessories as long as they don't obstruct biometric face and neck features.

Another new policy lets people change listed genders with a physician's signature. Previously, a judge's order was required.

At separate West Virginia DMVs, two transgender women were told last year to remove makeup, jewelry and wigs for license photos.

In April, South Carolina similarly changed its license photo requirements after a lawsuit settlement with a female transgender teen told to remove makeup.
