NEW YORK (AP) — Officials say there's no indication that today's technical issue that stopped trading on the New York Stock Exchange is connected to a computer outage that grounded United Airlines flights for a couple of hours this morning. They also say there's no indication that the problem is the result of a cyber-attack. The White House says President Barack Obama was briefed about the stock exchange problem by his homeland security adviser, who said there's no indication of malicious activity.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Dozens of law enforcement officers are posted inside and outside the South Carolina Statehouse as House lawmakers debate the Confederate flag. Some protesters who support removing the flag waved signs at cars driving past the front side of the Statehouse, where the flag flies next to a monument to Confederate soldiers. Unlike earlier in the week, no protesters who support the flag were visible. State police have said they're investigating death threats against a number of lawmakers.

MONK'S CORNER, S.C. (AP) — Investigators say they have not yet determined what caused an F-16 and a small Cessna to collide yesterday over South Carolina, killing a man and his son. They're dealing with two crash sites that are about ten miles apart. A federal investigator says the F-16 pilot, who survived, will be interviewed -- but possibly not for several days. A coroner says the body of Michael Johnson was found in a river. The search for his son is being conducted in the same area.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The U.S. Bureau of Land Management says a gun belonging to one of its agents was used in the shooting death of a woman walking on a popular San Francisco pier. A spokeswoman says the service weapon was issued to an agency ranger, and was stolen from the agent's car while he was in San Francisco on business. Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez pleaded not guilty yesterday to murder charges in the death of Kathryn Steinle. He told television news stations he found the gun on the pier and it accidentally fired. Sanchez has been deported to his native Mexico five times and is suspected of living in the United States illegally.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio judge who refused to marry a same-sex couple says he wants to know if he can opt out of performing gay weddings. The judge says he didn't marry the couple earlier this week because of personal and religious beliefs. Another judge was brought in to perform the wedding the same day.
