RENO, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has rejected a proposal to list the North American wild horse as a threatened or endangered species. Friends of Animals and The Cloud Foundation filed a petition last summer seeking Endangered Species Act protection for tens of thousands of mustangs they say are threatened with extinction on federal lands across 10 Western states, including Nevada.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A suspended Las Vegas police detective has been sentenced to probation in a case alleging that he attacked and injured a prostitute. Michael John Kitchen was arrested in January after a woman who told police she's a prostitute said he attacked her and took money he had already paid when she told him sex would cost another $150.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A gunman accused of wearing a disguise to rob an armored vehicle guard outside a Las Vegas casino has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison and ordered to repay more than $36,000. U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden says 31-year-old Arquarius Robertson also was sentenced Tuesday to five years' supervised release after prison for his role in the December 2009 heist outside the Palace Station hotel-casino.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Two northern Nevada teachers have been honored by President Barack Obama for helping students succeed in the fields of math and science. KRNV-TV reports Carrie Hair from Swope Middle School and Jan Hrindo from Incline Middle School were both honored yesterday with the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Winners receive a $10,000 award.
