AMERICAN FORK, Utah (AP) — Timpanogos Cave has been temporarily closed after a visitor accidentally set off bear spray there.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports (http://bit.ly/1BYnjAn ) that the spray was released Tuesday afternoon. National Park Service spokeswoman BJ Cluff says they've never had anything like this happen before.

Bear spray is made to deter bears and uses capsaicin found in chili peppers. Tours are on hold at Timpanogos because of the cave's inadequate ventilation and humidity.

No injuries from the bear spray were reported, but some people on the tour reported mild itching or burning throats.

Rangers say they hope to reopen the cave Wednesday morning.

Visitors who purchased tours during the closure can reschedule or refund their tickets.
