HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia has banned hunters using natural deer urine attractants to lure the animals.

A regulation that goes into effect Wednesday makes it illegal for hunters to possess or use the substance.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries adopted the regulation earlier this month to prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease.

The disease is caused by proteins that are believed to spread through deer urine, saliva and feces. Ten cases have been confirmed in Virginia.

Nelson Lafon, a state deer project coordinator, tells The Daily News-Record (http://bit.ly/1JukjhZ ) that hunters can use synthetic deer attractants.

He says stores can still sell natural deer urine attractants because they are legal to use in West Virginia and other states.
