SALT LAKE CITY — Former Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff is expected to plead not guilty today to seven felony charges of obstructing justice, accepting improper gifts such as beach vacations, among others. Shurtleff and former state attorney general John Swallow are accused in a pay-for-play scandal in the attorney general's office.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The nation's largest LGBT group is planning a conference in Salt Lake City just days before the conservative World Congress of Families stages a convention in the city. Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, held a news conference Saturday in Salt Lake City that his group is backing the Inclusive Families Conference on Oct. 23-24. The World Congress of Families is set to hold its international convention Oct. 27-30.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Magna man has been sentenced to life without parole for his role in a 2013 kidnapping and execution-style killing of a man near a Weber County ski resort. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Viliamu Seumanu was sentenced despite the man's insistence that he is innocent. Seumanu's attorney says he will file an appeal.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Census data show motorists in the Salt Lake City metro area have a shorter commute than the national average and many other major Western cities. The average commute is about 22 minutes. That's less than the national average of nearly 26 minutes and also well below Las Vegas and Denver.
