OAK ISLAND, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina officials are urging anglers to voluntary avoid shark fishing when people are swimming nearby as the town where two young beachgoers were almost killed is weighing a ban.

The state Division of Marine Fisheries on Thursday asked people fishing from piers and beaches not to lure sharks to their hooks by tossing fish chunks into surf areas. Officials say floating chum brings hungry shark into areas where they could find swimmers. Sharks also gravitate to piers, where smaller fish hang out.

The coastal town of Oak Island is considering whether it can stop shark fishing after two young people lost limbs in separate shark attacks within 90 minutes of each other on Sunday. One happened in the shadow of a fishing pier. The other was 2 miles away.
