WASHINGTON (AP) — A landmark, fast-track trade bill that pits President Barack Obama against members of his own party has an uncertain future ahead of two House votes today. House liberals are trying to drum up support for a defeat of a bill they favor that would provide job training for workers displaced by trade. It's needed to pass the trade measure.
NEW YORK (AP) — A licensed engineer who has done work at the Clinton Correctional facility in Dannemora, New York, says two inmates who cut themselves out of the prison did high quality work -- or they had help. The two convicted murderers used power tools in their escape and are still at large despite a massive manhunt. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the law will come down hard on any prison system employee who helped the escapees.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — The charity Save the Children is being dumped in Pakistan. The government put a lock on the gate to their Islamabad offices and says it wants all foreign nationals with the charity out of the country in 15 days. Save the Children has previously been accused of helping a vaccination program that the Pakistani government thinks was a CIA front used to obtain DNA samples in the hunt for Osama bin Laden.
BERLIN (AP) — German prosecutors say there's evidence the co-pilot who crashed Germanwings Flight 9525 also explored alternate means of suicide. Duesseldorf prosecutor Christoph Kumpa confirmed a report in a German daily that says the co-pilot researched how to obtain deadly drugs and the possibility of a living will. The crash killed all 150 people on board.
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Rescuers in Nepal are again searching for landslide victims today. The slide swept through six mountainous Nepalese villages Wednesday, killing 24 people and leaving dozens more missing. Heavy rainfall today is hampering the search and rescue about 310 miles east of the capital, Kathmandu. Landslides are common during the rainy season, which began in June and ends in September.
