DANNEMORA, N.Y. (AP) — An employee at a Dunkin' Donuts across the street from a maximum-security prison in upstate New York says it's been "nerve-wracking" since two convicted murders escaped yesterday. Beth Nichols says one employee even had a panic attack after correction officers came by with photo IDs of escaped prisoners Richard Matt and David Sweat, saying they were dangerous and shouldn't be approached if seen. Authorities are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to their capture.
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — The U.S. soldier who murdered 16 Afghan villagers in 2012 says he had lost compassion for Iraqis and Afghans over the course of his four combat deployments. The News Tribune newspaper of Tacoma obtained an eight-page letter Staff Sgt. Robert Bales wrote requesting that his life sentence be reduced. He said after being in prison for two years, he now understands that what he thought was normal was the farthest thing from it. His request was rejected.
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Times reports a third retrial is set to begin tomorrow for a Marine court martialed for the 2006 killing of an Iraqi civilian. Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins III was convicted in 2007 by a Marine jury of unpremeditated murder for the killing of a former Iraqi police officer. The killing was meant to warn Iraqis to stop planting roadside bombs and cooperating with insurgent snipers.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore police are investigating two more slayings as the city endures a spike in violent crime. Police say a woman's body was found inside a burning house early this morning in northeast Baltimore. Police believe the woman was killed, and the house was then set on fire. Separately, officers found a 22-year-old man who had been shot multiple times in northwest Baltimore. There were 42 homicides in Baltimore last month, making May the city's deadliest in more than 40 years.
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Blanca is getting weaker, but it's nearing Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. The U.S. National Hurricane Center has downgraded Blanca to a Category 1, and says it's likely to drop to tropical storm strength by the time it passes to the peninsula's southern tip. But with memories still fresh from Hurricane Odile (oh-DEEL'), Mexican authorities have put thousands of troops on alert and are warning residents to be prepared for intense rains.
