CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson right-handed pitcher Clate Schmidt said he has been diagnosed with lymphoma.
Schmidt posted on Twitter Tuesday that doctors found he had nodular sclerosing lymphoma, a disease where lymph nodes in the neck can become enlarged. Clemson confirmed Schmidt's condition.
Schmidt said his prognosis is good because the disease was caught early and is treatable with chemotherapy.
The pitcher appeared in 18 games this season and made six starts. He had a record of 2-3 with a 4.67 ERA in 52 innings of work. His last appearance on the mound came against North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament on May 22.
Schmidt's brother, Clarke, was a freshman pitcher at South Carolina this past season.
The elder Schmidt thanked people for their support and vowed to fight the disease.
