BERLIN (AP) — The office of German ex-chancellor Helmut Kohl says he has had to spend longer than anticipated in a hospital following a hip operation and that he is doing well.
Following widespread German media speculation Tuesday that the 85-year-old Kohl was in critical condition in intensive care, his office says "Dr. Helmut Kohl is doing well under the circumstances."
His office says Kohl had a hip operation May 8 and then needed a second procedure that meant he needed to stay longer in the hospital.
The office says "following that he will go into rehabilitation for the new hip which he will do in connection with a holiday."
