HOUSTON (AP) — The National Weather Service says a tornado is what hit an apartment complex in Houston this morning, blowing out windows, damaging roofs and toppling trees. Two people were taken to a hospital. The weather service rated the twister an EF-1, with winds of about 100 mph. Elsewhere in Texas, flooding has damaged an estimated 1,000 homes in Hays County and hundreds of people have been evacuated.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says its latest air strikes in Iraq included four near Ramadi that destroyed 19 armored vehicles. It's unclear whether any of the vehicles hit had been left behind by the Iraqi army. Iraqi soldiers who abandoned Ramadi to Islamic State fighters last weekend left large numbers of U.S.-supplied vehicles, including several tanks, which are now presumed to be in Islamic State hands.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Thousands of motorcyclists have made their annual ride through the nation's capital to salute military veterans. After a rally at the Pentagon, the Rolling Thunder "Ride for Freedom" crossed the Potomac and cruised around the National Mall. Some of the bikers rode with large American flags trailing behind them. Marines in uniform and white gloves saluted as the bikers roared past the Lincoln Memorial and other monuments.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The family of Anne Meara says she and Jerry Stiller were married for 61 years, and worked together almost as long. The actress and comedian has died at age 85. The couple performed as Stiller & Meara on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and other programs in the 1960s. Meara also appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, including recurring roles on "All My Children" and "The King of Queens." Meara is survived by her husband, her son Ben Stiller and her daughter Amy.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Juan Pablo Montoya has overcome an early mishap to win his second Indianapolis 500. Early in the race, Simona de Silvestro rear-ended Montoya, causing damage to his wing. Montoya's crew managed to fix it under caution, and the 2000 Indy 500 champion methodically worked his way back to the front. Montoya's Penske Racing teammate Will Power finished second, followed by Charlie Kimball.
