TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The Nobel Prize-winning mathematician whose struggle with schizophrenia was chronicled in the 2001 movie "A Beautiful Mind" has died in a car crash in New Jersey. Police say John Forbes Nash Jr. and his wife Alicia Nash were killed yesterday when the taxi they were taking from the Newark airport got into an accident. A colleague says the couple had just returned from Norway, where the 86-year-old Nash received an award from the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters in Oslo.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Ash Carter says the Islamic State group's takeover of Ramadi is stark evidence that Iraqi forces lack the "will to fight." He's told CNN's "State of the Union" that Iraqi soldiers "vastly outnumbered" their opposition in the capital of Anbar province but quickly withdrew. The head of Iraq's parliamentary defense and security committee disputes that. He tells The Associated Press that the Iraqi troops did have the will to fight, but they lacked weapons, good equipment and aerial support.
DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — The governor of Syria's Homs (hohms) province says the Syrian army is deploying troops near the ancient town of Palmyra (pahl-MEER'-uh), which fell to the Islamic State group last week. The governor says the troops are battling Islamic State gunmen in the area and apparently are planning to try to retake the city. He says Islamic State fighters have committed massacres in Palmyra and taken away civilians.
