MIAMI (AP) — Two gunmen opened fire on a group of young people sitting in an open area of an apartment complex in Miami-Dade County, killing a 13-year-old and wounding four others, police said.
The gunmen approached four men, ranging in age from 22 to 28, who were sitting around a table Monday night and starting firing what police believe were high-powered rifles. The teen was standing nearby when he was struck.
"It appears as if this child, we can call him a child even though he's in his early teens, was standing around and was not a target," police Det. Alvaro Zabaleta said. "Once again gun violence has struck one of our teenagers."
The gunmen fled after the shooting.
Fire rescue crews took four victims to a hospital. The fifth victim was taken to a hospital by friends.
The teenager died at the hospital a short time later. Police didn't release the conditions of the other victims.
Investigators haven't said what led to the shooting.
"We have now a family that is hurt, is mourning the loss of a child," Zabaleta said, urging anyone who knows anything about the crime to contact authorities.
