LAS VEGAS (AP) — A severe thunderstorm with hail as large as a quarter moved through the Las Vegas area this morning. The National Weather Service says that the storm represents the latest in several low-pressure systems moving up from the Pacific Ocean bringing colder temperatures and scattered showers to southern Nevada and the West.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Jury selection has begun at the murder trial for an elderly Sparks man who says he was acting in self-defense when he fatally shot an unarmed trespasser. Prosecutors maintain Wayne Burgarello was acting out of revenge, not self-defense, when he armed himself with two handguns before he entered the abandoned duplex he owns and opened fire on two trespassers unprovoked last year.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board says a pilot didn't radio a distress call before the fiery crash of a single-engine airplane that killed one person and injured three others after taking off from Laughlin. NTSB spokesman Nicholas Worrell says the four-seat Rockwell Commander 114 crashed and burned about 6 p.m. Sunday on Needles Highway.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Sunday's edition of the Nevada Appeal newspaper was a landmark for the paper. The Carson City-based paper celebrated its 150th anniversary of publishing its first paper. Gov. Brian Sandoval joined local officials in the newsroom for the celebration, presenting publisher Mark Raymond with a commemorative license plate.
