DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota woman who dropped out of high school to help on the family farm more than five decades ago finally can add receiving her diploma to the list of things she's done throughout her life.
Katherine Schuler, 71, graduated with her GED diploma this month in a special ceremony for 18 students at Lake Region State College, the Devils Lake Journal (http://bit.ly/1PnlKSD ) reported. She earned it earlier this year through an adult education center at the college.
"Katherine came to the Adult Learning Center in the beginning of November 2014 after over 50 years of being out of the classroom unaware that she was going to take the new more rigorous GED test that began in January of 2014. In three and a half months, Katherine passed all four of the GED tests," said April Duchscher, director of the adult education center.
Schuler worked so hard to earn her diploma because wanted to set a good example for her grandchildren. To graduate in such a short amount of time, Schuler studied for four hours a day while working a full-time and part-time job, as well as exercising for more than two hours each day.
"Katherine is an excellent example of how hard work pays off for her family (children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren), the students at the center, and the community," Duchscher said.
Schuler has been nominated to be North Dakota's adult student of the year. She'll find out whether she won later this year.
Schuler also has the opportunity to continue her education after Lake Region awarded her a scholarship.
