JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri Legislature has ground to a halt with just one day remaining in its session because of a scandal involving the House speaker and partisan animosity in the Senate.
House Speaker John Diehl resigned Thursday, a day after a newspaper reported that he had exchanged sexually suggestive emails with a college freshman serving as a Capitol intern.
The House took no action on legislation Thursday.
Neither did the Senate, where Democrats continued to block votes because of their frustration that the Republican majority had forced a vote earlier this week on legislation limiting union powers.
Lawmakers face a 6 p.m. CDT Friday deadline to pass bills.
One of the bills in jeopardy would reauthorize medical provider taxes that are needed to supply about $3.6 billion for the Medicaid program.
