OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty to aggravated murder for beating his girlfriend's infant to death has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1bRQVTx ) that as part of the plea deal, prosecutors on Wednesday did not seek the death penalty for 24-year-old Adam Barney.
In August 2014, Barney was watching 14-month-old infant Kenzie LaBuy and his girlfriend's other two children while she was at work. Barney says he became frustrated by the children's behavior and then took it out on the infant, violently punching and squeezing her.
Barney's defense attorney spoke for him Wednesday and told the judge that he understands it was his actions that took the life of the child.
Kenzie's mother, Kaci Rupert, was not in court for the sentencing.
