FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Plans call for closing three Flint elementary schools and consolidating several others as part of a cost-cutting effort.
The Flint Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday night to close Carpenter Road, Cummings and Scott elementary schools at the end of the school year.
The Flint Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1AYAWtA ) the district is in the midst of a $21.9 million deficit and the updates come amid a district plan to eliminate that deficit by June 30, 2021. Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins says "tough decisions were made."
In addition to the closures, the board also voted unanimously in favor of converting three elementary school buildings into kindergarten through eighth grade buildings over the next two years.
