LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A former legislator who represented west Arkansas in both the state House and Senate has been appointed by Gov. Asa Hutchinson as the state's drug director.

The Arkansas Department of Human Services announced Wednesday that Denny Altes would replace Fran Flener, who retired last year.

During his legislative career, Altes worked to curb substance abuse in Arkansas. Legislation he sponsored included addressing the overprescribing of drugs by doctors and a law limiting purchases of cold medications containing pseudoephedrine, which is used to make methamphetamine.

The drug director oversees and coordinates activities of the Arkansas State Drug Abuse and Prevention Coordinating Council and coordinates all alcohol and drug abuse prevention and treatment initiatives in the state.
