AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The school year is ending early for lower elementary school grades at an East Texas elementary school badly damaged by a deadly tornado.
In a statement Wednesday, Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams said he has directed the Texas Education Agency to allow the Van Independent School District to cancel further classes this school year for pre-kindergarten through third grade at J.E. Rhodes Elementary School. A tornado tore through the town Sunday night, killing two people and causing extensive damage to the elementary school.
The other schools in the Van district will remain closed until Monday.
Van is a town of about 2,600 residents 70 miles east of Dallas.
