PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The ACLU-Rhode Island, NAACP and 13 other organizations are asking school committees in the state to postpone using the new state assessment to qualify students for high school graduation.
The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1HgZa9L ) the letter asked school officials to avoid using scores from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) for graduation and grading purposes until its intended date in 2020.
PARCC is a standardized test taken by elementary and secondary schools.
Education officials had made 2020 the year in which PARCC scores would be tied to high school graduation in order to give school districts time to prepare students. But the Council for Elementary and Secondary Education later revised the policy to allow schools to make it a requirement as early as 2017.
