TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho has condemned Declo High School's graduation dress code citing gender stereotyping and dress codes that discriminate against gender.
The Times-News reports (http://bit.ly/1PjjUSA ) that a document was handed to Declo High School students instructing girls to wear dresses, blouses and skirts in white or pastel. Boys were instructed to wear pants, but not to wear sandals, though girls could.
The ACLU wrote a letter to the state's school district superintendents warning them about discriminatory dress codes.
District spokeswoman Debbie Critchfield says the district's graduation policy doesn't mention clothing and it's up to individual schools to decide which recommendations to give students.
In the ACLU letter, the organization says schools should initiate a process to change standards by announcing there should be no distinction between male and female attire.
