UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urgently calling on all parties in Burundi to show calm and restraint following a coup attempt against President Pierre Nkurunziza.
Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday the U.N. chief stressed to all Burundian leaders "the need to preserve peace and stability in a country that has suffered so grievously from previous bouts of violence."
Dujarric says U.N. officials are in contact with the special envoy to Burundi, Said Djinnit, who is attending a summit of East African leaders in Tanzania's capital. Nkurunziza was also attending the summit, which was called to focus on the crisis in Burundi.
France has called for urgent Security Council consultations on the situation in Burundi, and diplomats say those are likely to take place Thursday.
