CLIVE, Utah (AP) — A waste disposal company is trying to reassure regulators and residents that a type of nuclear waste that grows more radioactive can remain safely buried in a barren, remote area of northwest Utah. A handful of Utah residents recently attended open houses to scrutinize EnergySolutions' plan. The plan will go through a 45-day public comment process later this year that state officials say will play a big role in whether they'll allow the waste to be buried in Utah.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has expanded a natural disaster declaration to include several additional counties suffering from drought in Nevada and Utah. Officials announced that Nevada's White Pine County and Utah's Sanpete County have been designated primary disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the lingering drought. Neighboring counties also qualify for the loans available through the USDA's Farm Service Agency.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — A Utah couple has been arrested in Arizona for allegedly recruiting a 15-year-old runaway to work as a prostitute. Court records show the couple are being held on $10,000 bond on suspicion of child prostitution related charges. The two from West Valley City, Utah don't have lawyers yet.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say a 2-year-old child has died after he was hospitalized over the weekend with critical in injuries in a child abuse case. Layton police say the child was beaten during a potty training incident and officers are investigating new charges against the child's mother and her boyfriend. No attorneys have been listed for the couple.
