UNDATED (AP) — The American Red Cross says dozens of people are spending the night at a shelter in Van, Texas following Sunday's tornado that killed two people. The Red Cross says nearly 120 homes were destroyed or sustained substantial damage in Sunday night's twister 70 miles southeast of Dallas. Volunteers say on Tuesday they'll distribute food and clean-up supplies to affected neighborhoods. Texas officials say about 30 percent of Van is either destroyed or damaged.
NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has come down hard on the New England Patriots' Tom Brady and the team for deflating footballs used in the AFC title game. Brady has been suspended for four games and the Patriots have been fined $1 million. The league also has taken away two draft picks. The Patriots say the punishment is too severe. Brady's agent says he'll appeal. Agent Don Yee says, "the discipline is ridiculous and has no legitimate basis."
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A judge in California is refusing to change his mind about releasing a serial rapist who's admitted attacking about 40 women. The judge in Santa Clara County has ordered the release of Christopher Hubbert, who's known as the "pillowcase rapist," saying Hubbart is not "a danger to the health and safety of others." But Hubbart's neighbors fear he'll rape again. Prosecutors say Hubbert violated the terms of his release when he twice let his ankle monitor battery run too low.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Houston man is trying to stop his execution Tuesday night for the murders of his 15-year-old girlfriend, her mother and her grandfather 13 years ago. Thirty-two-year-old Derrick Dewayne Charles is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to stop his lethal injection. Charles' attorneys say he's mentally incompetent for execution and that they need time and court-approved money for experts and investigators to pursue that claim.
DETROIT (AP) — Only three of seven midsize SUVs from the 2015 model year do well in front-end crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given the Nissan Murano and Jeep Wrangler four-door the highest rating of "good" in the latest round of crash tests. The Ford Flex got the second-best "acceptable," rating. The test mimics what happens when a car's front corner collides with an object such as a utility pole. The Dodge Durango, Jeep Cherokee and Hyundai Santa Fe got "marginal" ratings, and the Dodge Journey received a "poor" rating.
