HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Some Shelton teens are being told their prom dresses don't meet the school's dress code and they won't be allowed into the dance.
Dr. Beth Smith is the headmaster at Shelton High School. She announced Friday over the intercom that dresses with long slits, cutouts and backless styles won't be allowed at prom.
Parents and teens plan to present a petition to the school board Monday seeking to get those rules overturned. They say they were not told of the requirements before Friday. They say there is not time to buy new dresses before the May 16 dance.
Superintendent Freeman Burr released a statement saying the guidelines were put in place well before prom.
The school says about a half dozen girls have been told to get new dresses.
