CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — The composer for "The Hunger Games" movie series as well as the films "Maleficent" and "The Dark Knight" has been named artistic director of the Henry Mancini Institute at the University of Miami.
James Newton Howard will start work at the Coral Gables school in January. The Henry Mancini Institute at the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music is a graduate training program for 65 aspiring professional musicians. Howard succeeds film composer and trumpeter Terence Blanchard, who led the institute for seven years.
Howard has been nominated for an Oscar eight times. He won a Grammy for his work on "The Dark Knight."
Howard says Mancini was one of his musical heroes, and he's eager to work with Miami students "in an ever-evolving musical world."
