NEWTON, Mass. (AP) — A Newton seventh-grader is off to Washington D.C. to represent Massachusetts in the National Geographic Bee next week.

Thirteen-year-old Lucy Chae is a student at the Charles Brown Middle School. She is also an accomplished musician and loves reading.

Lucy is one of 54 students remaining in the national competition that tests youths' knowledge of world geography.

The first round starts on Monday and the competition concludes with the final 10 participants in the championship round on Wednesday. It will be moderated by journalist Soledad O'Brien.

The winner gets a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society and an all-expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.
