DELMONT, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says residents of Delmont being asked to leave for safety reasons, after a tornado hit the town southwest of Sioux Falls today. A spokeswoman says about 20 buildings are damaged and the town has no water, power or phones. She says there are unsecured propane tanks. At least three people were hurt, but a hospital says they are in good condition.
DALLAS (AP) — The National Weather Service says a likely tornado has caused damage near the North Texas town of Denton. Roofs were ripped off of buildings and trees were damaged in the town about 40 miles northwest of Dallas. Last night, one person was killed and another critically injured when a tornado hit Cisco, a rural farming and ranch area about 100 miles west of Fort Worth.
BUCHANAN, N.Y. (AP) — New York's governor says part of a nuclear power plant remains offline after a transformer fire that has created another problem: thousands of gallons of oil leaking into the Hudson River. At a briefing today on the Indian Point 3 plant, Andrew Cuomo said transformer fluid has seeped into the river. Emergency crews have circled the leakage with booms that cover a diameter of about 300 feet. But the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says several thousand gallons of oil may have overflowed the transformer moat.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A unique species of baleen whales in the Gulf of Mexico may be threatened with extinction. The National Marine Fisheries Service says special protection may be warranted for a small population of Bryde's (BROO'-dihs) whales that scientists believe live year-round in the DeSoto Canyon. The area off the Florida Panhandle is near the site of BP's oil spill five years ago. Threats the whales face include being struck by passing ships and oil and gas activities.
WASHINGTON (AP) — As the Senate prepares to debate his trade agenda, President Barack Obama is sharpening his criticisms of a vocal opponent on the left. In a weekend interview with Yahoo Politics, the president said Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts is factually wrong and politically motivated in fighting his efforts to obtain "fast track" authority to negotiate trade agreements. The Senate faces a key procedural vote Tuesday, and full debate on trade can't proceed unless 60 of the 100 members agree to it.
