CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has charged the owners of a Carson City rental house with refusing to rent to a couple because they have children.
The agency announced Friday that Betty and Hughston Brinson are charged with engaging in discriminatory housing practices.
The charge stems from a complaint filed in March 2014 by the parents of three children alleging an owner refused to rent a three-bedroom home to them.
When the mother responded to a newspaper classified ad and stated she had several children, the owner allegedly told her that the home was not for her.
The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to deny housing because a family has children under the age of 18 and to make statements that discriminate against families with children.
