SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah State Board of Education has adopted new teacher evaluation guidelines that rely mostly on classroom observation by the school principal.
The board voted Friday to base 70 percent of an evaluation on classroom observation, 20 percent on student performance and 10 percent on feedback from parents and other stakeholders.
While many details will be left up to school districts, education leaders hope the new system will bring consistency to the way teacher effectiveness is measured in Utah.
Efforts to revamp the evaluation process were spurred by Utah lawmakers' passage in 2012 of a bill requiring teachers to be ranked on a 4-point scale, with only those earning top rankings eligible for scheduled salary increases.
Some board members expressed concern over the new system, saying it could be subject to bias and inconsistency.
