FERRUM, Va. (AP) — Ferrum College's centennial campaign has raised more than $28 million.

The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/1EUp6of ) the college says the money has been raised through the campaign, which began two years ago when the college turned 100 years old.

The original fundraising goal was $25 million.

Spokeswoman Kimberly Blair says the campaign doesn't officially end until the end of June.

More than $16 million of the money raised will go to student scholarships. Ferrum President Jennifer Braaten says the college has a niche of helping students who struggle. The college helps the 40 percent of the student population who are first-generation college students and those who are just down on their luck.

The remaining funds will be split among capital projects, faculty endowments, academic programs and the college's general endowment fund.
