MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Senate has given preliminary approval to its version of a bill designed to streamline school governance and hold down costs.
By a vote of 27-3, the Senate advanced a version of the bill that pushes Vermont toward consolidated school districts, but looks to have made significant progress by 2020. The House set a more ambitious goal of making the same sort of progress by 2017.
The House version would cut back significantly on small school grants as part of an effort to get Vermont's schools to join larger educational districts.
The Senate dropped those provisions.
The bill comes up for final Senate action on Friday. It's expected to go to a committee of conference to have final details worked out.
