CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada Assembly committee has passed a bill requiring laboratories to put dogs and cats up for adoption when they're done performing research on them.
The Assembly Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining Committee approved SB261 on Thursday in a 10-2 vote.
The bill sponsored by Democratic Sen. Mark Manendo requires labs to offer animals up for adoption before euthanizing them as long as they are healthy enough to go to a new home.
It was watered down before it passed the Senate, but most of its provisions were restored when it moved to the Assembly.
The bill now heads to a vote of the full Assembly.
