WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — The University of North Carolina School of Medicine is considering setting up a branch campus in Wilmington.
The StarNews of Wilmington reports (http://bit.ly/1Ijgxa ) that the branch would be established in collaboration with the New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The hospital has a teaching faculty in place and has hosted medical students from UNC on rotations for years. But the new campus would train students for a year at a time, instead of for just a few weeks on rotations.
The UNC Medical School already has branches in Asheville and Charlotte.
The Wilmington branch would need to be approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the accrediting body for medical schools.
It's not clear how long that would take but UNC hopes to have a Wilmington branch beginning next year.
