RENO, Nev. (AP) — The four-year drought in the Reno area has taken another victim: A popular off-leash dog park.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/1E8Yo8G ) that Rancho San Rafael Regional Park will close because its only source of irrigation water is being cut off.
The Truckee River is expected to lower to the point that it will no longer flow into the Highland Ditch used by the park.
Experts say keeping the 25-acre pasture open while grass dries and goes dormant would likely result in long-term damage to the area.
Washoe County Regional Parks District Manager Andy Mink says the former cattle and hay pasture has been used as an off-leash dog park since around 2000.
It attracts as many as 500 to 800 visitors on peak days.
