WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says it's too early to say if a claim by the extremist group Islamic State that it was responsible for a weekend attack in Texas is valid. Counterterrorism officials say the group has previously taken responsibility for events where it had no operational role. Two gunmen from Phoenix were killed by police in suburban Dallas on Sunday after an attack at an event displaying caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Police say a northern Idaho officer shot by a man who stole his patrol car has died of his injuries. A spokesman for police in Coeur d'Alene (kohr duh-LAYN') says Sgt. Greg Moore died. Moore was shot early Tuesday after checking on a suspicious person in a neighborhood. A suspect was arrested after a car chase that police say reached speeds of 125 mph.
NEW YORK (AP) — The district attorney who empaneled a grand jury that declined to charge the white New York police officer for the videotaped, chokehold death of an unarmed black man is headed to Congress. Republican Ray Donovan won Tuesday's special election to fill the seat left vacant when the Republican incumbent pleaded guilty to tax fraud. The district covers Staten Island and a small part of Brooklyn.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The man accused of abducting and killing a University of Virginia student has been charged with capital murder. If the trial of Jesse L. Matthew Jr. goes to trial, a prosecutor in Charlottesville says she will seek the death penalty. The indictment accusing Matthew of killing Hanna Graham is said to be based on new forensic evidence.
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii is the latest of a growing number of states making it easier for transgender people to change their gender on their birth certificates. The Hawaii Legislature on Tuesday dropped a requirement that birth certificates could only be modified after gender reassignment surgery.
