BALTIMORE (AP) — Court and sheriff's office records show the highest-ranking Baltimore police officer involved in the arrest that led to Freddie Gray's death had been hospitalized three years ago over mental health concerns. Citing "credible information," deputies also confiscated Lt. Brian Rice's official and personal guns. Rice initially pursued Gray who fled after making eye contact with the officer earlier this month. Gray was critically injured while in police custody and died a week after his arrest.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Several hundred people have gathered at City Hall in Philadelphia to protest the death of a Baltimore man while in police custody. The protesters are also raising concerns about community and police relations in Philadelphia, Demonstrators have been chanting "No justice, no peace," and "Black lives matter." Protesters also are marching through downtown Baltimore this evening.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has adopted a compromise GOP budget that promises to speed repeal of the new health care law while giving the Pentagon a 7-percent budget increase. The 226-197 vote sends the non-binding budget plan to the Senate for a vote next week. It promises to balance the budget in nine years with more than $5 trillion in spending cuts, though Republicans make clear they aren't interested in actually imposing controversial cuts to programs like Medicare, food stamps, Pell Grants or the traditional Medicaid program with follow-up legislation.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. secretary-general is raising the alarm on Yemen. In a statement, Ban Ki-moon's says more than 1,200 people have been killed while the country's health, water and telecommunications systems are "on the brink of collapse." Ban repeats his call for an immediate ceasefire, or at least humanitarian pauses in the fighting. A Saudi-led coalition continues to conduct airstrikes against Shiite rebels supported by Iran.
NEW YORK (AP) — Sixteen co-workers at a New York City biopharmaceuticals company have won a $58 million Mega Millions jackpot. New York State Lottery officials say the group calls itself the Lucky 16 Trust. A spokesman for the company Ophthotech say members of the winning group work in all parts of the corporation, from senior to administrative posts. She says the employees have been pooling funds since 2010 to play the lottery, each pitching in $4 weekly to buy tickets.
