HONOLULU (AP) — Authorities in Hawaii have identified the victim of a fatal shark attack off Maui as a 65-year-old Kihei woman.

Maui County police say Margaret C. Cruse was found floating in the waters off Ahihi Kinau Bay on Wednesday morning and was taken to the beach at a popular surfing spot. Attempts to revive the woman failed.

Authorities say Cruse's injuries suggest she was attacked by a shark.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the area to swimmers, divers and other ocean activities. The area will be closed until officials determine it is safe to reopen.

Police say an autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.
