LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has selected Derek Fisher to receive an honorary doctoral degree next month.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1DJ2JiM ) reports the university announced Tuesday that Fisher, a UALR alumnus, will receive an honorary Doctor of Liberal Arts Degree during the school's graduation ceremony.
Fisher played basketball for the UALR Trojans and was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year during his senior year at the university.
Fisher played 18 seasons in the NBA for several teams and won five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. He is currently the head basketball coach of the New York Knicks.
According to a press release from the university, Fisher created the Fisher Fellows Life Skills program to mentor UALR student-athletes.
