INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The U.S. synchronized swimming team has launched an online fundraising campaign with a goal of $50,000 to help pay its way to the world championships in Russia this summer.
Members of the national team train in California, where they practice twice daily six days a week. Coach Myriam Glez says they receive a modest stipend to cover living expenses but many of the younger athletes are supported by their parents, while the older athletes are mostly self-funded.
The crowdfunding campaign through the RallyMe site is underway and will end on May 31. The world championships are July 24-Aug. 9 in Kazan, Russia.
Glez says the team needs to cover travel, room and board and other competition expenses, in addition to training expenses leading to the event.
Other U.S. governing bodies, including U.S. Speedskating, have used online crowdfunding to help pay their expenses.
