MADISON, S.D. (AP) — A top administrator at Bryant University in Rhode Island was named the new president of Dakota State University on Monday.

The South Dakota Board of Regents said José-Marie Griffiths will succeed David Borofsky, who unexpectedly quit the 3,000-student school in August. Griffiths will become the school's 23rd president late this summer.

Griffiths has leadership experience in higher education and a wealth of knowledge in information systems and research, said Regent Terry Baloun, who led the search process.

"Our search committee was confident that she was the right choice to advance the university's mission to produce graduates with expertise in the use of computer technology and information processing," he said.

Griffiths called Dakota State "a dynamic and innovative institution."

"I was initially very attracted to DSU because of the university's strength in high tech and informatics programs, combined with depth and breadth in business, education, liberal arts, math, and the sciences," she said.

Griffiths has worked for more than 30 years in higher education and has focused her academic research on the use of information technology in higher education, the contribution of technology and informatics, and health informatics. Informatics is the science of computer information systems.

Griffiths holds a doctor of information science and a bachelor's degree in physics from University College London, where she also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in computer science and statistics. She has been vice president for academic affairs at Bryant University since 2010.

Griffiths was among four finalists for the Dakota State job. The others were Don Capener, dean and endowed chairman of the Davis College of Business at Jacksonville University; Douglas Hensler, provost at the Naval Postgraduate School; and Thomas Mitzel, dean of faculty and vice president of academic affairs at Trinity College.

Marysz Rames is serving as the interim president at DSU.
