WASHINGTON (AP) — The government is revealing that an American and an Italian who were held hostage by al-Qaida were inadvertently killed by CIA drone strikes earlier this year. Also killed were two Americans who were working with the terror group. The hostages included Warren Weinstein of Maryland. And the Americans who were working with al-Qaida included Adam Gadahn, who had served as a spokesman for the terror network.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is offering his "grief and condolences" to the families of the American and Italian hostages killed by a CIA drone strike. He's defending the legality of the strike -- and he says there had been no evidence that the two were being held at what the U.S. had determined was an al-Qaida compound in Pakistan.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Warren Weinstein, the American who was killed while he was held by al-Qaida, was a 73-year-old development worker. He was abducted in August of 2011 -- four days before his seven-year stint with the U.S. Agency for International Development was supposed to end. In a message released previously, al-Qaida said it was "not interested in keeping" him, and that it wanted to exchange him for prisoners in U.S. custody. The Italian who was killed, Giovanni Lo Porto, was an aid worker with a German relief group. He disappeared in Pakistan more than three years ago.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A passenger on the SkyWest airlines flight to Connecticut that made an emergency landing in Buffalo, New York yesterday is describing a lack of air in the cabin and shortness of breath as others on board lost consciousness. The flight, carrying 75 passengers, departed from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago and had been bound for Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. It landed in Buffalo a little before noon. Passenger Larry Johnson says it became difficult to breathe part way through the flight and none of the air vents were working. In all, three passengers lost consciousness and others reported feeling ill.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — An attorney for real estate heir Robert Durst says state weapon charges against him have been dropped, clearing the way for federal proceedings in New Orleans on similar charges. Durst, who faces a murder charge in an unrelated California case, remains jailed without bond in Louisiana. He was arrested at a New Orleans hotel in March. Prosecutors say he had a gun and marijuana in his room.
