PARIS (AP) — France's prime minister says five attacks have been prevented from happening in France since a January assault by Islamic extremist gunmen left 20 people dead. Manuel Valls spoke on French radio today after a would-be gunman was stopped from carrying out attacks on French churches on Sunday. Authorities say the 24-year-old from Algeria was stopped only because he called for an ambulance after accidentally shooting himself in the leg. Authorities say the man is also a suspect in the shooting death of a French woman.

NEW YORK (AP) — Clean-water advocate Christopher Swain says environmental experts have been working hard to clean up a federal Superfund site in New York City, but Swain went for a swim in the still-polluted Gowanus Canal on Wednesday, which was Earth Day. Swain wore a yellow-and-black protective suit and a green swim cap as he spent about 30 minutes in water he said tasted like "mud, poop, ground-up grass, detergent, gasoline." A sign warned people to stay out of the water. After the swim, Swain gargled with hydrogen peroxide.
