SANAA, Yemen (AP) — The Shiite rebels who have taken over large parts of Yemen, including the capital, now say they welcome United Nations-led talks to find a political solution to the conflict. The Iranian-backed Houthi (HOO'-thee) rebels have been under an air assault led by the Saudis for nearly a month. They issued a statement today calling for a resumption of dialogue and any efforts under the auspices of the U.N. that lead to a peaceful compromise.
BOSTON (AP) — The jury deciding whether Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) should get the death penalty has heard from the family of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer killed days after the bombings. His stepfather told jurors today that Sean Collier's mother was so devastated that she couldn't get out of bed for months and, two years later, still hasn't been able to return to work. Prosecutors say Tsarnaev and his brother shot Collier in his police cruiser during a failed attempt to steal his gun.
ELLABELLE, Ga. (AP) — A fiery crash on a Georgia interstate has killed five people and injured three others. The Georgia State Patrol says seven vehicles, including two tractor-trailers, collided early today on Interstate 16 west of Savannah. A 6-mile stretch of the highway remained shut down more than five hours after the crash occurred. What caused the crash is under investigation. Troopers say weather conditions were clear.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch says his panel will work late into the night if necessary to finish work on fast track" trade legislation. The Utah Republican is predicting a "strong bipartisan vote" to advance one of President Barack Obama's top trade initiatives, despite strong opposition from labor unions and other groups. One opponent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, has invoked a Senate scheduling rule to postpone the committee's actions for hours.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced a plan to reduce New York City's waste output by 90 percent by 2030. He says the average New Yorker throws out nearly 15 pounds of waste a week, which added up to about 3.6 million tons in 2005. The mayor's plan aims to reduce that amount by more than 3 million tons, through incentives and other steps, including an overhaul of the city's recycling program.
