CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada senators have approved Gov. Brian Sandoval's proposed tax plan. The bill is Sandoval's proposed restructuring of the state's business license fee designed to raise more than $437 million to fund K-12 education programs. The measure passed out of a committee on a party-line vote after hours of hearings. It's part of a plan to raise or extend more than $1 billion in taxes.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno City Council members are prioritizing projects after discovering higher revenues and lower expenses left a $10-million surplus in the budget. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the city is looking at paying off $2.3 million in debt, using $1.4 million to clean up a urine-soaked city hall parking garage, and spending $200,000 apiece on installing public restrooms downtown and public wifi in Midtown.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Police are asking for help to find two people and a white pickup truck after shots were fired at a North Las Vegas police substation 10 days ago. Police say investigators have video of the shooting at the department's northwest area office on Washburn Road at Allen Lane. No one was hurt.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — The smoky haze over Reno and parts of the eastern Sierra is coming from wildfires in Siberia more than 5,000 miles away. The National Weather Service says the smoke has been traveling across the Pacific Ocean since Sunday. NWS meteorologist Brian O'Hara says a few thunderstorms in the forecast may help clear the air on the Sierra's eastern front the next few days.
