APPLEGATE, Ore. (AP) — Cats with the feline version of the AIDS virus have a cat cottage to call their own now that Sanctuary One animal hospital has completed its specialized facility in Applegate.

The Mail Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1bpQcK2) the shelter has given the cats a place to live without the possibility of spreading the virus to other cats.

Sanctuary One Executive Director Brooke Nuckles Gentekos said she's hoping to change the practice of euthanizing cats when they're found to have the virus. FIV slowly but severely weakens a cat's immune system, but Gentekos said they can live long and happy lives with the proper care.

The Cat Cottage can house up to five FIV-positive cats.
