CATANIA, Sicily (AP) — A captain and a crew member face criminal charges in connection with a weekend shipwreck off the coast of Libya that may have killed as many as 900 people. The victims were immigrants fleeing war-torn Libya and possibly other trouble spots. Prosecutors in Italy say the captain and crew member were aboard a boat that brought 27 survivors ashore.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A spokesman for a Muslim couple in Alabama says their 20-year-old daughter fled a Birmingham suburb to join Islamic State militants in Syria after being recruited on the Internet. The young woman has been identified only as Hoda. A family lawyer says the young woman was "brainwashed."

BALTIMORE (AP) — Top officials in Baltimore at City Hall and the police department are promising a thorough investigation of a man who died of a severe spinal injury while in police custody. The arrest happened April 12, but investigators say they haven't determined what caused the fatal injury. An autopsy found significant spinal injury. A lawyer for the family of Freddie Gray says the 25-year-old's spine was "80 percent severed at the neck."

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Egg industry experts say it's too early to say if egg prices will be affected by a bird flu outbreak in Iowa. The highly infectious and deadly virus was confirmed on a farm in northwest Iowa. More than 5.3 million hens at the farm may have to be destroyed.

HONOLULU (AP) — The chief of staff of Hawaii Gov. David Ige (EE'-gay) has met members from a group of opponents against building a giant telescope near the summit of Mauna Kea. The two groups delivered a thumb drive wrapped in red ribbon they said contains 53,000 signatures against building the Thirty Meter Telescope on a mountain held sacred by Native Hawaiians.
